About Santorini
Santorini, known in Greek as Thira, is the southernmost island of the Cyclades in the Aegean Sea, shaped by one of history's most powerful volcanic eruptions around 1600 BC. The crescent-shaped island encloses a flooded caldera, along whose steep rim sit the main towns of Fira and Oia with their white houses and blue domes. The excavation at Akrotiri preserves a Bronze Age town buried under volcanic ash. Sunsets over the caldera, vineyards on volcanic soil, and colored beaches make Santorini one of the Mediterranean's most famous destinations.
